What is cannabis or marijuana?

Cannabis is the proper name of the plant commonly referred to as marijuana. Marijuana is the leaves, flowers and viable seeds of the cannabis plant. This plant has a variety of medicinal benefits and can be consumed in a variety of ways.

What is THC vs CBD?

THC and CBD are both cannabinoids, which are naturally occurring chemical compounds in cannabis plants. Cannabinoids each interact differently with cannabinoid receptors in the brain and body, able to produce a wide range of effects.

Tetrahydrocannabinol, most commonly referred to as THC, is the cannabinoid associated with feeling “high” and having psychoactive effects. Positive effects include: feelings of euphoria, relaxation, reduction of pain, increased appetite, increased sensory perception, increased socialization and reduction of nausea.

Cannabidiol, most commonly referred to as CBD, is known for counteracting THC’s psychoactive effects, as it itself is non-psychoactive. For this reason, CBD is commonly used medically to help treat a variety of conditions such as certain forms of pediatric epilepsy, a broad range of psychological disorders, such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia and even cancer.

What are the differences between “Sativa”, “Indica” and “Hybrid”?

These are all different categories of cannabis which produce a wide range of effects.

Indica is known for its relaxing and calming effects; it’s more of a body high, good for pain, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping — you’ll likely be able to nod out a couple hours after smoking. Recommended for night-time use and for chronic pain.

Sativa is a more upbeat, artistic, and cerebral high. It sparks the imagination and energizes you directly after smoking. It also can keep you awake if you smoke too close to bedtime. Recommended for day-time use.

A Hybrid, as the name suggests, is a combination of the Indica and Sativa plants. The combination is usually either Sativa or Indica dominant which means that one hybrid could give you a body high with a slight head high and others could have the opposite effect.

What causes the “high” from using cannabis?

The “high” feeling from using cannabis comes mainly from the cannabinoid THC. Your body creates its own cannabinoids, which are similar to those found in the Cannabis plant, within the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The chemicals in cannabis, called cannabinoids, activate cannabinoid receptors that are naturally found in the body creating this sensation.

How effective are topicals?

Cannabis-infused lotions, salves, oils, sprays, and other transdermal methods of relief work by binding to a network of receptors called CB2.  Even if a topical contains active THC, it still won’t induce that intense “high” you’d get from smoking or ingesting cannabis. With most topicals, cannabinoids can’t breach the bloodstream; they only penetrate to the system of CB2 receptors. Transdermal patches, however, do deliver cannabinoids to the bloodstream and could have psychoactive effects with a high enough THC content.

What symptoms do cannabis-infused topicals treat?

Topicals are most popularly chosen for localized pain relief, muscle soreness, tension, and inflammation, but anecdotal evidence is beginning to show a widening spectrum of potential benefits, from psoriasis, dermatitis, and itching to headaches and cramping.

What are the effects of edibles?

The various levels of THC found in edibles, work together to create an ideal treatment for many disorders / health conditions including chronic pain, muscle inflammation and spasms, autoimmune disorders, nervous system disorders, insomnia, and nausea — provided the patient is well enough to ingest the medication.

How much of an edible should I consume?

As a general rule remember, you can always eat more but never eat less. Everyone will react differently to different amounts of THC and the best method is to start small. Some doctors suggest starting at 5mg doses and slowly increasing after evaluating the effects. Edibles can take anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours to kick in.
